Where do I get coursebooks in the Library?

  • All your coursebooks are on Reserve, and may be used in the library for two hours. They are listed in Portia, our online catalog. You can search by professor or by course name to see what books are on reserve.

How do I find First Assignments and other Class Materials?

  • For easy access to Class Materials, click on Course Reserves on the library sidebar to find if your Professor has submitted a syllabus, or first assignment, and to see if he has a TWEN course or exams online for that course.  The exams are passworded, but you can submit your nesl email address as username, with your email password.  You will need a recent Adobe Reader, which can be downloaded for free from http://get.adobe.com/reader/.

How do I print in the Library?

  • When you select print from any workstation or your laptop you will be asked to enter a unique name, and when you put your copy card into the print reader, you will be asked to enter the same name at the print computer.
  • The printers are located in the basement of the Library beside the Computer Lab/TMS office; on the 1st Floor of the Library, facing the Reference Desk; and on the 2nd Floor of the Library at the far end of the Reading Area. All print jobs go to all of the printers, and remain for a few hours.
  • To send a print job from your own laptop you will need to install the drivers first – see the TMS instructions & downloads for laptops. Alternately, you can go to the Help Desk in the basement, at the foot of the library's main staircase, and they will set up your laptop printing for you.
  • You should have received a copy card at Orientation, courtesy of the Library. If you need to replace or add money to it, vending machines are located in the basement beside the library elevator, and near the rest rooms on the 1st floor of the Library.

Is there a scanner in the Library?

  • The scanner is in the basement to the right of the elevator.
  • It is designed for easy scanning from books, and allows you to either save your document in pdf format on a thumb drive, or to email it to yourself.

Can I borrow a laptop?

  • The library has 13 Dell and 3 Mac laptops that can be checked out to current students for in library use. Checkout time is three hours.
  • We have lots of rules about not leaving the laptops unattended and so forth, at http://www.nesl.edu/library/laptop.cfm
  • In addition to the laptops themselves, we will check out adaptors, security locks, and dvd players.
  • We need time to make sure they are in good working order, so we ask that laptops be returned one half hour before closing.

Where do I go with computer issues?

  • If you need help, you should seek out the Technology & Media Services Department (TMS) office, across from the printers and beside the large computer lab.
  • See https://tms.nesl.edu/ResourceCenter/Pages/StudentLaptopSupport.aspx for hours and a description of their services. They will help your with your email logins, virus protection, and laptop specs, among other things.

What is this CALI dvd and how do I log on?

  • CALI (Center for Computer-Assisted Instruction) offers a series of lessons written by law professors all over the country.  First year students have found them especially effective reviews when preparing for the first set of exams in law school.  So save the disc as it will allow you to work the questions even with an iffy internet connection.
  • The online lessons, at http://www.cali.org, may be available through twen, also.  You need to go to the cali site, however, and customize your username and login.  To do this you need the authorization code, which you should have received in your packet.  We stuck it in the dvd jacket.
  • If you can't find the card with the authorization code, please stop by the circulation desk to get another, or call the reference desk at 617-422-7299.

Where do I find academic support / Academic Excellence materials?

  • Our very popular Academic Excellence Collection is to the left as you come into the library. It is designed for browsing the materials by learning style, and is keyed to first year courses.

  • When you find an item you would like to use, bring it to the Circulation Desk for two hour in-library checkout.   If you are checking out flashcards we will substitute the empty box with a full one.
  • If you want a 30 day checkout, many of the materials in this collection have older editions in the regular stacks.

Should I buy academic support materials?

  • Wait.  Some Professors recommend a particular series.  Check out our Academic Excellence first, and remember we also have good review books in the stacks that a Portia search will reveal.  If you really like one approach over another, you might want to purchase it at review time.

What is Accordent and how do I gain access to class recordings?

  • If your Professor tells you his class was recorded, it will likely be on Reserve in DVD format.
  • If you understand it is on Accordent, you can log in here with your nesl email address (name@nesl.edu) and your email password. You can then watch the video from any computer. If you are in the library, we do have headsets you can check out!

How do I sign into Library Databases from home?

  •  If you use the links from the Library's Database page, you should see a PORTIA login screen. Use your first/last name and the barcode # on the back of your ID card to identify yourself as a library patron.
  • If you are on campus anywhere and logged into the nesl network, you should get in automatically.  If you have trouble, please contact a Reference Librarian.

What is a Jenzabar number and how do I use it to gain access to NECIN?

  • Jenzabar numbers are issued by the Registrar, and you will need it as identification at exam time and as your username to sign on to NECIN to check your grades at the end of the first semester.
  • NECIN is linked from the upper right "links and contacts" box on every page of the website.  It will not be available during the day if the Registar is working on grades, but is usually available after five.  Later it will be the place to go to get your transcript, Registrar's forms, etc.
  • The Jenzabar number will be printed on your school ID.

How do I get to the Registrar's Office?

  • Turn left out of the front door of the law school and walk down Stuart until you come to a parking lot that looks like an old gas station.  You can turn left on a pedestrian walkway that turns into Church St.  46 Church St., aka the Registrar's Office, is two very short blocks on the corner of Winchester and Church Street.
  • Here is a map that might help:
